In the autumn of 1940, all the residents of Friar, New Hampshire, collectively embarked on a journey up a twisting mountain path, disappearing into the wild. They abandoned all their possessions, including their houses, clothing, and money, without any prior notice. The sole hint of their destination was a solitary word carved into a rock at the forest’s boundary: YELLOWBRICKROAD.
