The Goodbye Girl

At 36, Paula McFadden, a musical dancer nearing the end of her career, had a comfortable life with actor Tony DeSanti. However, Tony lands a role in a European film and leaves her behind instead of taking her to Hollywood. To make matters worse, he sublets their New York apartment to Elliot Garfield. Elliot, showing kindness, allows Paula to stay and even lets her keep the master bedroom. Paula’s practical young daughter, Lucy, quickly warms up to Elliot’s charm, but Paula is resolute in her disdain for all actors. Despite the pressure of playing a Broadway Shakespeare lead in a manner that seems too flamboyant for San Francisco, Elliot is determined to win Paula’s heart despite her ingratitude.
