The Last Alaskans

In 1980, the U.S. government prohibited new human settlements in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, a sanctuary that hosts a diverse array of native wildlife and covers an area comparable to South Carolina. Today, just a few families are permitted to live in the refuge, scattered across seven authorized cabins. Within the next century, all existing permits will expire, leading to the complete absence of human inhabitants in the area.
