Constantly subjected to the cruelty of her abusive, alcoholic husband Chun-yu (Wang Jung), the delicate Chan Sau-ying (Tanny Tien Ni) faces an inevitable death from tuberculosis. The new maid, Yi-wah (Chen Szu-chia), sympathizes with her mistress’s dire situation. However, after enduring Chun-yu’s mistreatment one too many times, the two women decide to drown him one night. They dispose of his body in a nearby pond, but Sau-ying becomes convinced that his swollen corpse has emerged from the water to exact revenge. Yi-wah dismisses these fears as the hallucinations of a guilty conscience and illness, yet it seems the house is truly being haunted by a restless spirit that refuses to be pacified.
