A few years following her mother’s death, 17-year-old Tennie’s standing at school suffers significantly just before prom. Adding to the complexities of teenage life, her father, Robert, an advertising executive who has successfully rebuilt his business, attempts to mend his relationship with Tennie. Ignoring his therapist’s advice, the overly enthusiastic Robert makes earnest efforts to connect with his daughter by expressing his care in his own unique way. He enlists the help of his new 19-year-old driver and intern, Jack, to learn more about Tennie’s personal life. Raised largely by her extended family, Tennie is academically gifted and mature beyond her years, with a compassionate nature, a touch of sarcasm, and a streak of rebellion. Once she becomes aware of her father’s scheme, Tennie realizes that to get him to back off, she must persuade him to find a romantic partner.
